The World Bank (WB) has pledged to support Vietnam’s policy-making process as it aims to attract investment to clean energy sources such as wind and solar power in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
WB Vice President Rachel Kyte made the promise at a working session with Vietnamese Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Nguyen Minh Quang in Washington DC on February 27.
She said the bank appreciated Vietnam’s orientations in cutting down on funds for fossil fuel use while promoting clean energy.
The organisation will consider the nation’s proposal for preferential loans for urgent projects on climate change adaption, mangrove afforestation and sea dyke building, she added.
The Vice President also committed to helping Vietnam participate in a programme studying impacts of hydroelectric projects along the Mekong River, as well as the BioCarbon Fund’s activities to reduce gas emissions.
At the meeting, Minister Quang spoke highly of the results achieved in WB-funded projects on environment and natural resources in Vietnam.-VNA
