Speakingat a press briefing to introduce the first Vietnam International Furniture Fair(VIFF 2019) in Ho Chi Minh City on November 6, Dien Quang Hiep, the association’schairman, said: “Exports of wood and forestry products exceeded 10 billion USD inthe first 10 month of the year. Therefore, it will not be difficult.”
“Vietnamhas just 6 percent of the world’s export market, so there is still room for thecountry to increase exports.”
“Therising demand in new and promising markets such as Canada, the EurasianEconomic Union, and South Central Asia increases opportunities for woodenfurniture exports, especially of classical style furniture.”
Tariffson many products would continue to be reduced and removed under the Comprehensiveand Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership and the EU-Vietnam FreeTrade Agreement, offering an advantage to Vietnamese products, he said.
“Thereare opportunities to boost furniture exports.
“TheGovernment has set a target of 20 billion USD in 2025, and it is not anunrealistic target.”
But thereare challenges requiring woodworking enterprises to keep a close eye on themarket and make appropriate plans, he said.
Bui ChinhNghia, Director of the Department of Forest Production Development under theMinistry of Agriculture and Rural Development, said: “To meet the export targetof 18-20 billion USD, the industry will need about 30 million cubic metres oftimber, and local supply will gradually meet demand.”
In 2010it only met 25 percent of the demand, but now it is 70 percent, he said.
Allfurniture made for exports are made from legally sourced timber, mainly acaciaand rubber wood, he said.
VIFF 2019
The VietnamInternational Furniture Fair (VIFF) 2019 will be held from November 27 to 30 atthe Saigon Exhibition and Convention Centre with 500 booths to be set up byover 100 local and foreign exhibitors including Taiwan, Malaysia, China andThailand.
It willshowcase bedroom furniture, dining sets, kitchen cabinets, flooring, officefurniture, outdoor furniture, interior furnishings, decorative accessories andmaterials, hardware and fittings, and machinery used in the woodworkingindustry.
Manyseminars and conferences will be held, including on promoting foreigninvestment in Vietnam’s wood processing and forestry industries and onPEFC/VFCS certification: Demand, supply and benefit.
It willbe organised by the Binh Duong Furniture Association and the Taiwan FurnitureManufacturers Association.
Vietnamhas around 4,700 wood and forest products processing enterprises.
Nghiasaid its timber and forest products are exported to more than 120 countries andterritories.
Thecountry is the fifth largest wooden product exporter and second largest inAsia.
The sectorenjoyed a trade surplus of 7 billion USD last year./.
