World Bank in Vietnam keen on climate change response

The World Bank has paid special attention to projects to respond to climate change, Country Director of the World Bank (WB) in Vietnam Victoria Kwakwa said during her working session with authorities of the Mekong delta city of Can Tho in the city on December 16.

Kwakwa also expressed hope that her institution will be able tosponsor Can Tho in big projects that are poised to work for thedevelopment of the entire Mekong Delta region.

Theworking session focused on reviewing the progress of the ongoingWB-funded urban upgrade project in the city, which, as the WBrepresentative viewed, has initially beautified the city and improvedlocal people’s living standards.

The city’s authorities pledged to make the effective use of the WB’s funding so as to wrap the project up in 2015.

The city’s future target is to continue mobilising and making the bestuse of external investment sources to develop infrastructure in suchrealms as education and response to climate change.-VNA

Vietnam launches 13 mln USD project to phase out ozone-depleting substances

Funded by the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol and implemented through the World Bank (WB) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the project aims to help Vietnam meet its international commitments in managing and phasing out controlled substances. It will run from 2026 to 2031 with a total budget of over 13 million USD.

Solutions sought to restore Mekong Delta wetland ecosystems

Experts at the workshop described wetlands as the “ecological heart” of the Mekong Delta, playing a vital role in water storage and regulation, climate moderation, carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, and livelihoods for millions of people through aquaculture, agriculture, and ecotourism. These ecosystems also help reduce disaster risks and enhance climate resilience.
