Hanoi (VNA) – The Phnom Penh Municipal Court on August 6 decided to charge President of the Khmer National United Party and former Deputy Prime Minister of Cambodia Nhiek Bunchhay of being an accomplice to drug production and importing substances to produce drugs.

Earlier on August 3, he was arrested by police in compliance with the court’s order.

In 2007, the police raided a major drug farm in Kampong Speu province owned by Chea Chung, advisor of Bunchhay, and found materials for drug production.

According to witnesses, Bunchhay regularly visited the farm together with Chea Chung.

Currently, Chea Chung, two Chinese and one Thai nationals are on jail on charge of drug production.

On June 4, King Norodom Sihamoni signed a decision to strip Bunchhay off his position as the government advisor.

If Bunchhay is convicted, his KNUP will be dispersed according to the newly-approved revised law on political parties.-VNA
