Cambodia sets date for 4th commune councillor elections

Cambodia has set June 4, 2017 as the date for the fourth commune councillor elections, according to a decision signed by Prime Minister Hun Sen on May 24.

Phnom Penh (VNA) – Cambodia has set June 4, 2017 as the date for the fourth commune councillor elections, according to a decision signed by Prime Minister Hun Sen on May 24.

The PM said all ministers and heads of all relevant bodies must implement this decision with high efficiency from the date of signature.

The Kingdom holds commune councillor elections every five years.

In the third elections in June 2012, PM Hun Sen’s ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) won 1,592 out of of the country's 1,633 commune chief seats, while two opposition parties, Sam Rainsy’s CNRP and the Human Rights party won a total of 40 seats and the royalist Funcinpec party obtained only one seat.-VNA
