Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen affirmed on September 8 that the arrest of Hong Sok Hour is in the name of preventing chaos in society after the opposition party Senator posted materials distorting the Vietnam-Cambodia border treaty to Facebook.

In a video aired on Cambodia’s national television, Hun Sen said Hong Sok Hour’s plot intended to wrongly guide public opinion for political benefit.

The action aimed to incite the people, harm national solidarity and unity and create animosity between the two nations, which could have lead to serious social security disorder, he said.

The PM also announced that the Cambodian Government is calling for the arrest of Hong Sok Hour’s accomplices who escaped to Thailand, demanding they return to Phnom Penh to face judgment.

On August 15, Cambodia National Rescue Party Senator Hong Sok Hour was arrested in Phnom Penh and accused of distorting the treaty’s Clause 4.

The Cambodia Senate also removed his immunity as a senator to enable authorised agencies to carry out legal proceedings.

Hong Sok Hour was accused by the court of fabricating false documents and causing serious social disorder. He could face 17 years in prison if found guilty.-VNA
