Myanmar will strive for peace and prosperity in the region, including the establishment of ASEAN Community in 2015, as it assumes ASEAN chairmanship next year.

The commitment was made by President U Thein Sein at a meeting in Nay Pyi Taw on October 29.

The President stressed the importance of the duty of ASEAN chairmanship in 2014, saying that it is the last year to take necessary preparations for the emergence of ASEAN Community by 2015.

He also emphasised the need to have thorough understanding of such duties and make constant efforts to serve these tasks actively.

Taking ASEAN chairmanship is a golden opportunity for Myanmar to show its leading role and dignity in the region and the world, U Thein Sein noted.

It will be the first time for the country to assume the regional leadership since it joined the group in 1997.-VNA
