Hanoi (VNA) – National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan’s scheduled official visit to Cambodia from September 27-28 aims to foster the ties between the national legislatures of Vietnam and Cambodia.

Comprehensive ties between Vietnam and Cambodia have been strengthened in recent years, with the 14 th meeting of the Inter-Governmental Committee and cooperation deals reached in 28 priority fields.

In 2016 alone, Vietnam has invested in 11 projects worth 211 million USD in Cambodia, raising the total number of Vietnam’s projects in the country to 172.

With total registered capital of 3.61 billion USD, Vietnam ranks fifth among 50 countries and territories investing in Cambodia, behind China, the Republic of Korea, the European Union and Malaysia.

Cambodia currently has 12 projects valued at more than 54 million USD in Vietnam, placing 49th out of 103 countries and territories doing business in Vietnam.

Last year, two-way trade hit 3.37 billion USD. The figure for the first four months of this year was 1.08 billion USD.

In legislative ties, an agreement signed by the two legislatures in April 2007 laid a legal foundation for effective ties. Regular exchanges between high-ranking officials, agencies and parliamentarian groups have contributed to promoting friendship between the two peoples.

Vietnamese and Cambodian legislators also shared experience and mutual support at multilateral parliamentary forums, especially within the framework of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly and the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

The law-making bodies of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia are conducting a dialogue mechanism between their External Relations Committees on the Development Triangle Area by alternately holding conferences reviewing the implementatation of cooperation agreements.

Vietnamese and Cambodian NAs will continue sharing experience, training personnel and monitoring socio-economic, cultural and education cooperation projects, as well as offering consultation at regional and global parliamentary forums.-VNA
