Nghe An (VNA) - A whale carcass weighing more than 10 tonnes was found washed up on the shore of Dien Hung commune, Dien Chau district in the central province of Nghe An on May 11.
The carcass, about 9 metres in length, was in the process of decomposition.
Local authorities and fishermen buried it on the same day in accordance with the customs and cultural practices of coastal residents.
Vietnamese coastal residents believe whale is a sacred animal that helps fishermen at sea. Therefore, they often rescue the animal or bury the dead ones in a solemn ceremony./.
Vietnam’s biggest whale skeletons on display on Ly Son Island
Two whale skeletons dating back over 200 years were fully restored and put on display in 2020 at the historical site of Lang Tan in Dong An Vinh hamlet on Ly Son island district, Quang Ngai province.
