A solemn ceremony was organised in Xuan Thoi Thuong commune in Ho Chi Minh City ’s outlying district of Hoc Mon on Nov. 22 to commemorate 70 years of the Southern Uprising.

State President Nguyen Minh Triet joined other senior Party and government officials, local authorities from 13 southern cities and provinces and almost 4,000 heroic mothers, war veterans and people from all walks of life at the ceremony.

In his speech delivered at the event, Secretary of the municipal Party Committee Le Thanh Hai recalled bright milestones of the Southern Uprising, which broke out on Nov. 23, 1940.

Due to the lack of mature preparations and conditions, the uprising failed, but wrote glorious, brilliant pages in the revolutionary history of the Party and people and set an example of brave struggle, indomitable will, revolutionary attacking spirit and patriotism, he said.

The official stressed that the spirit of the Southern Uprising was the rising spirit of the nation, the spirit for the country and the people, and the spirit of ceaseless combat. It imbued and upheld the nation’s patriotic and heroic tradition and glorious history in the new era, struggling under the flag of Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh Thought, Hai added.

He went on to say that, “The Southern Uprising laid a foundation for our people to rise up and gain glorious victory in the August Revolution, and left profound and valuable lessons for revolutionary stages in the present and the future”.

On behalf of the youth, Secretary of Hoc Mon district’s Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Committee Dang Tran Truc Dao said the spirit of the Southern Uprising would be a valuable tradition for both current and future young generations, encouraging them to contribute further to the industrialization and modernization process of the city and the whole country./.
