Hanoi (VNA) - The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

- At a recent regular press conference by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ministry’s Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang underlined that although the US Department of State’s 2023 Report on International Religious Freedom recognises some of the progress Vietnam has made in protecting and promoting the freedom of religion and belief, it still gives poorly objective comments based on unverified and inaccurate information about the reality in the country.

Responding to reporters’ questions on Vietnam’s reaction to the report, which included Vietnam on its special watch list, Hang stated that Vietnam is ready to work together with the US over matters of shared concern in the spirit of frankness, openness, and mutual respect in contentious issues, thereby contributing to the enhancement of the Vietnam - US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. - The Vietnam-Japan digital transformation association (VADX JAPAN) made its debut in Tokyo on July 7.

- The price of SJC-branded gold bars in the domestic market has remained stable despite the rising global gold price recorded over the past couple of weeks.

- The Ministry of Planning and Investment has provided updates for economic growth scenarios in the second half of this year, in which the Vietnamese economy could beat forecasts and expand at 7% for the full year.

In the first scenario, the economic growth could reach 6.5% in 2024, equivalent to the National Assembly’s target, with a growth rate of 6.5% in the third quarter and 6.6% in the last quarter. Read full story

- Although inflation has been controlled in accordance with the set target, state management agencies and enterprises have stayed vigilant and prepare price stabilisation measures in the remainders of the year.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) said total retail sales of goods and consumer service revenue during January - June rose 8.6% to over 3 quadrillion VND (118 billion USD). Localities with strong increases in the revenue included Quang Ninh (9.5%), Hai Phong (9%), Da Nang (7.8%), Can Tho (7.6%), Hanoi (6.6%) and Ho Chi Minh City (6.3%). Read full story

- Fruit and vegetable exports are forecast to continue going smooth in the time ahead thanks to abundant domestic supply and foreign markets’ growing demand.

The exports brought home 3.4 billion USD during the first half of 2024, surging 28% year on year, reported the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD). Read full story

- The number of labourers employed in the last six months reached 51.4 million, increasing by 195,800 compared to the same period last year, the General Statistics Office (GSO) has reported.

Notably, the rate of those joining the labour force in the second quarter was reported at 68.6%, the office said. Read full story

- Vietnam has surpassed Japan to top the list of favourable foreign destinations of Korean tourists, according to the travel trend analysis for the third quarter of 2024, which was released by the Republic of Korea (RoK) travel firm Kyowon Tour Travel Easy on July 8.

Travel booking data in the third quarter of this year showed that while Vietnam and Japan are still two destinations with high demand for reservations in the period, the increase in the number of tourists choosing China has also been remarkable, it said, attributing the result to many airlines’ resumption and expansion of flights to China during the summer.
