Hanoi (VNA) - The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

– Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with his Lao counterpart Sonexay Siphandone upon arriving in Vientiane, Laos for the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits on October 8 morning.

PM Chinh affirmed that Vietnam highly values and gives top priority to its great relations, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation with Laos, and remains committed to nurturing and advancing the Vietnam-Laos relationship toward sustainable and deeper development. Read full story

- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has just signed an official dispatch requiring continued support for businesses to overcome difficulties and promote production and business activities in the remaining months of 2024 and in the following years.

The dispatch stated that after nearly 40 years of renewal and development, Vietnam has had large enterprises capable of competing globally. In the context of significant changes in the global political and economic landscape, along with new protectionism trends linked to new technical and trade requirements, Vietnam needs policies to develop leading enterprises that can create new momentum for the economy, thus contributing to improving productivity and promoting innovation in key economic sectors as well as emerging industries. – French Justice Minister Didier Migaud has affirmed France’s readiness to cooperate with Vietnam in judicial affairs at a meeting with his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Hai Ninh in Paris on October 7.

The host said he is interested in legal and judicial cooperation with the Southeast Asian nation, and wishes to enhance it, firstly in the implementation of the cooperation programme for 2024-2025 signed by the two ministries. Read full story

– Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung has held talks with French Minister of Culture Rachida Dati in Paris, during which they signed a cultural cooperation programme between the two ministries for the 2024-2028 period, marking a new development in the Vietnam-France partnership in this field.

Hung expressed his pleasure at the activities that the two sides have carried out to celebrate the 50th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations and 10 years of the Vietnam-France strategic partnership. Read full story

– Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha hosted a reception in Hanoi on October 8 for President and CEO of Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation Shingo Ueno, during which he affirmed that Vietnam always welcomes and highly values Japanese businesses’ operations in the country, contributing to realising cooperation agreements between Vietnam and Japan.

– The European Chamber of Commerce (EuroCham) in Vietnam on October 8 released its 2024 Business Confidence Index (BCI) report for the third quarter of 2024, reflecting a positive trend in business sentiment despite the economic challenges posed by Typhoon Yagi and operation hurdles.

The BCI score saw a notable increase, rising from 45.1 in the third quarter of 2023 to 52.0 in the third quarter of 2024, signalling a strong year-on-year recovery despite tough external conditions. Read full story

– The total social investment capital disbursed during January – September rose 6.8% to some 2.42 quadrillion VND (97.2 billion USD) on the back of a fall in lending interest rate, robust production growth, and the continuation of tax incentives, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).

In its report announced on October 6, the office said disbursed capital in the state sector topped 664 trillion VND, inching up 4.1% against the same time last year, while the amounts in non-state and foreign direct investment sectors were over 1.33 quadrillion VND and 415.6 trillion VND, rising 7.1% and 10.7%, respectively./.
