Airport anti-drug flight failing to get off the ground

Drug smugglers are getting away with their criminal operations through Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport due to a lack of resources and insufficient inter-sectoral collaboration, participants heard at a conference held by the Hanoi Customs Department (HCD) in the capital on January 9.

It was reported that only one case of drug smuggling was detected at Noi Bai airport in 2013, a far cry from the 13 cases uncovered at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City over the same period.

Speakers blamed the lack of success on the poor facilities at the airport, inexperienced staff and a shortage of sniffer dogs.

Nguyen Van Hong, HCD deputy head, claimed that a lack of information exchanges between airport managers and drug enforcement forces is allowing sophisticated criminals to take advantage.

The deputy head of Vietnam’s General Department of Customs (VGDC), Nguyen Van Can, underlined the need for the HCD to overhaul its operation while taking the initiative in collecting information about passengers and flights.

He added that the VGDC will partner with the Ministry of Public Security’s drug taskforce to establish an inter-sectoral working group at Noi Bai airport to promptly handle suspected cases of smuggling.

Colonel Nguyen Dich Nam, deputy head of the Ministry of Public Security’s Drug Crime Investigation Department, warned that air warehouses and express delivery services are being used to serve drug trafficking deals.

Other delegates at the event stressed the need to raise public awareness and to encourage customs officials to work harder to combat criminal activity.

The one anti-drug success achieved by customs officers last year at Noi Bai International Airport occurred on December 7, 2013 when they seized 3.6 kg of cocaine being transported into Vietnam by a Philippine passenger. /.
