The customs sector detected and seized goods in 2,877 cases of trade fraud, smuggling and illegal goods transport totalling around 38.5 billion VND in the first quarter of 2010.

According to the General Department of Customs (GDC), the majority of smuggled goods were brought into Vietnam in small packages via the border.

It also said that the number of smuggling cases increased on land routes. Smugglers operated by mislabelling shipments in terms of the type of contents and volume as well as consumption purposes, and customs receipts for goods were unlawfully reused.

To combat smuggling, the GDC asked relevant agencies to get a handle on the situation in key areas and put forward measures to prevent violations in customs procedures as well as conduct investigations to tackle intricate, large-scale smuggling rings./.
