Hanoi (VNA) - An earthquake, measuring 2.9 on the Richter scale, struck Bac Tra My district in the central province of Quang Nam on November 2, but no damage or casualties were reported.
Nguyen Hong Phuong, Deputy Director of the Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Centre under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST)’s Institute of Geophysics, said small-scale earthquakes frequently occur in the district.
According to the centre, three quakes of 2.8-3.0 magnitude and some mild ones were reported in Tra My in October 2018.
Phuong said that the earthquakes in Bac Tra My and Nam Tra My districts of Quang Nam, which are believed to be near Song Tranh 2 hydropower reservoir, are identified as earthquakes that occurred when the water storage was carried out in the reservoir.
Scientists said that quakes like these would not cause great damage to local people.
Statistics from the centre showed that as many as 75 quakes of between 2.5-3.9 magnitude were reported in Bac Tra My district from 2017 to August 2018. All of these are directly related to hydropower activities. -VNA
