Hanoi (VNA) - A 2.7-magnitude earthquake was reported in Bac Tra My district of the central province of Quang Nam on October 25, according to the Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Centre under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST)’s Institute of Geophysics.
On October 21, two 2.6-magnitude earthquakes also occurred in Bac Tra Min at 9:32 am. More than two hours later, a quake measuring 2.8 magnitude happened in Nam Tra My district.
Nguyen Hong Phuong, vice director of the centre, said that the earthquakes in the two districts, which are believed to be near Song Tranh 2 hydropower reservoir, so they are identified as earthquakes that occurred when the water storage was carried out in the reservoir.
Scientists said that quakes like these would not cause too great damage to the people.
According to the centre, as many as 75 quakes of between 2.5-3.9 magnitude were reported in Bac Tra My district from 2017 to August 2018. All of these are directly related to hydropower activities. -VNA
