As many as 29 ministries, sectors and central agencies and 55 provinces and cities have by May 29 declared their assets and incomes in 2009, according to the Anti-corruption Central Steering Committee Office.
Also by the end of May, ministries, sectors and localities all have completed the second phase of the administrative reform, which plays an extremely important role in preventing and combating corruption.
These were reported by Vu Tien Chien, Chief of the Anti-corruption Central Steering Committee Office, during a working session with Truong Tan Sang, Politburo member and Permanent member of the Communist Party Central Committee’s Secretariat, in Hanoi on June 8.
Chien said in the past five months, the fight against corruption was carried out diversely in conjunction with the movement of “studying and following the moral example of President Ho Chi Minh”, helping heighten cadres, Party members and people’s awareness of anti-corruption work.
Thus far, a legal framework has been completed for an institutional system mandating anti-corruption affairs, laying a political and legal foundation for the work in both short and long terms, Chien noted.
He said measures to prevent and combat corruption have continuously been implemented in an open and transparent manner in the functions of State offices, organisations and units.
Speaking at the session, Truong Tan Sang said from now to the end of this year, efforts should focus on boosting campaigns and education programmes on the fight against the menace.
Those who have bravely stood out in the fight against corruption should be promptly honoured and awarded to encourage others to involve actively in combating the scourge, the Party official said.
Besides, limitations in regulations on the authority, responsibility, and tasks of the agencies involved in anti-corruption work should be fixed as soon as possible to ensure effective performance and operation of these agencies, Sang said.
Agreeing that preventive work in the anti-corruption fight has been bolstered, the Party official emphasised that inspection, detection and handling of corrupt cases should be institutionalised and further enhanced.
He discussed the correct selection of areas and issues for the anti-corruption work from now to the end of this year, regarding it a key to ensure the effectiveness of the fight and gain the entire society’s support and response.
In the remaining seven months, the anti-corruption work will concentrate on areas at risks of corruption, entailing, the management and use of land, taxation and customs, construction, natural resources and environment, personnel affairs, the settlement of long-standing petitions and complaints on cases of corruption.
Inspection, auditing, supervision, investigation, prosecution and related activities should continue to be strengthened and relevant agencies should reinforce their coordination in detecting and dealing with corruption cases./.
