Nguyen The Thao has been re-elected as Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee for the 2011-16 term at the first session of the municipal People's Council, the 14th tenure 2011-2016.

Thao, 59, with a PhD in economics and an architect by profession, won roughly 94 percent of the vote.

The People's Council also re-elected four vice-chairs of the committee and elected two new ones.

Ngo Thi Doan Thanh, 54, has also been re-elected as head of the Hanoi People's Council for the 2011-2016 term, winning nearly 98 percent of the vote.

At the 11th Party Congress held in January, both Thao and Thanh were voted as members of the Party Central Committee.

Speaking at the meeting, Hanoi Party Secretary, Pham Quang Nghi, affirmed that the city People's Council had greatly contributed to Hanoi's development, stressing that the People's Council in the new term would need to continue reform its working style in order to improve its effectiveness./.
