The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Committee in Moscow and the embassies of the bloc’s ten member countries to Russia on September 19 held a meeting to mark the 46th anniversary of ASEAN.
Speaking at the event, Singaporean Ambassador to Russia Lim Kheng Hua reviewed the milestones in the development of ASEAN over the past 46 years.
She highlighted the important role played by the association in the southeast region’s development, saying that for nearly half of the past century, ASEAN not only ensured peace and prosperity for the region but also played an important role in many wider international forums.
She added that ASEAN is grateful for Russian support and predicted that the country will continue to raise its influence in the Southeast Asian region.
Ambassador-at-Large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Alexander Ivanov (who also heads the Russian Federation department to develop business relations with ASEAN) said Russia and ASEAN need to take advantage of all available opportunities to further strengthen relations between the two sides.
He congratulated ASEAN on its great achievements since it was established 46 years ago, saying ASEAN is developing into a strong community.
He also affirmed that ASEAN always remains a priority partner in relations with Russia .
Participants to the event enjoyed an art performance programme celebrating the diversity of ASEAN countries’ special foods.
Organised annually in Russia , the event is a significant activity, contributing to strengthening and tightening the friendship within ASEAN and between ASEAN and international friends.-VNA
