The Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs in the southern province of Ba Ria – Vung Tau is making concerted efforts to protect children.
The department is working with various agencies to carry out in-depth discussions, documentary screenings and leaflet and flier distribution to help families avoid common causes of premature childhood mortality, such as traffic accidents or drowning.
The province also allocated funds to districts to open swimming classes.
The ‘safe house’ model, which reviews and minimises possible sources of danger to children at home such as electricity network, cookers and chemicals, continues to be implemented to raise awareness among the community.
According to the department, there were 391 accidents with children involved in 2014 in the province, of which 153 cases happened at the children’s own homes. Twenty children died from accidents, most by drowning.-VNA
