Binh Duong(VNA) – The southern province of Binh Duong strives to complete the nationaltarget programme for new-style rural area building with all communes winningthe status in 2018.

The goal was announcedon January 17 by Nguyen Tan Binh, Director of the Department of Agriculture andRural Development of Binh Duong, at a conference to review the implementationof the programme in 2017 and launch tasks for 2018.

By the end of 2017, 94percent of total communes of Binh Duong had been recognised as new-style ruralareas.

Binh said that theprovince has associated the new rural building programme with its majorprogrammes and projects, thus promoting the potential and strength of ruralareas. The policy has helped improve transport, health care, education infrastructureof rural communes, while creating jobs and speeding up the urbanisation process.Per capita income in new-style rural communes rose to 45 million VND in 2017,he added.

Last year, Binh Duongmobilised over 3.03 trillion VND (133.32 million USD) for the programme,including 742 billion VND, or 24.5 percent, from local people.

The programme hasbrought about positive changes to rural communes, with major infrastructureworks upgraded.

So far, 90 percent ofrural roads in Binh Duong have been concreted. The local irrigation system hasensured water for all crop area. All locals have accessed power, while 98percent of them have enjoyed clean water, and 98 percent of the new-style ruralcommunes have had the health care system meeting national standards.-VNA

Vietnam among countries with high human development: UNDP report

According to the report, which evaluates human development progress based on the Human Development Index (HDI), tracking achievements in health, education and income, Vietnam’s HDI in 2023 reached 0.766, ranking 93rd out of 193 countries and territories. This marked a substantial leap from 0.499 in 1990, representing a 53.5% increase, a notable trajectory of growth over more than three decades.

Local officials are required to strengthen on-the-ground inspections and take prompt action to address any signs of stagnation or lack of accountability in executing the campaign. Xuyen Viet Oil case: Appellate verdict announced, with six receiving reduced sentences

Specifically, the trial panel sentenced the mastermind of the case, Mai Thi Hong Hanh, ex-Director and Chairwoman of the Board of Members of Xuyen Viet Oil, to 11 years in prison for the crime of “giving bribes” and 17 years for “violating regulations on the management and use of State assets, causing loss and wastefulness.” The combined sentence is 28 years in prison, 2 years less than the first-instance verdict.
