Hanoi (VNA) - April 7 was designated as the “All People’s Voluntary BloodDonation Day” 24 years ago and, ever since, the blood donation movement has attractedthe participation of tens of thousands of people across the country.

Over the past time, the movement has drawn the due attentionof Party and State leaders, as well as the active engagement of centrally-run agenciesand localities.

In 2020, marking the 20th anniversary ofthe drive, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong sent a letter to residentsand soldiers nationwide, praising blood donors for their good deed.

At a meeting with outstanding blood donors last year,Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh stressed that blood donation is theresponsibility, the duty, and the "order" from heart of each person.

The movement has witnessed reforms and creativity inapproaches and organisation methods. The use of technology, social media, andother media channels has helped attract widespread participation from thepublic. Blood donation events have been organised in an increasinglyprofessional and creative manner, capturing the attention and involvement of alarge number of people.

Many activities have been held and leftstrong ripple effect such as the blood donation campaign ahead of the Lunar NewYear, the Red Spring Festival, the Summer Red Drops, and the Red Journey, orthe events held on the occasion of the National Voluntary Blood Donation Day(April 7) and the World Blood Donor Day (June 14).

Last year, a total of 1.5 million blood units werecollected, with 99% from voluntary donors.

However, Vietnamneeds about 2 million blood units for emergency aid, medical treatment, and reserves for accidents, disasters, and epidemics, said Dr. TranNgoc Que, Director of the National Blood Centre under Vietnam's CentralInstitute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion.

Given this, he stressed the need to step up thecommunications work and roll out diverse blood donation programmes and eventsin order to attract more participants. /.

WHO donates 9,000 rabies vaccine doses to Vietnam’s high-risk provinces

The post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) vaccines, valued at 100,000 USD, were delivered to the Centres for Disease Control (CDC) in the two provinces through coordination with the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE), the Ministry of Health, and local authorities. The donation was made possible with financial support from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.

Facing the World to host ENT surgery conference in Hanoi

To be held at 108 Military Central Hospital and Hong Ngoc General Hospital on October 18-19 respectively, the conference “Facing the functional, oncological and aesthetic challenges within the head and neck” will be attended by British and Vietnamese doctors specialising in ENT (ear, nose and throat) and head-neck surgery, plastic and aesthetic surgery, oncology and maxillofacial surgery.
