Ca Mau fishermen kick off the year

Over 300 offshore fishing vessels of Song Doc town, the southernmost province of Ca Mau, have returned ashore after their month-long voyage at sea, in which they earned at least 100 million VND (nearly 4,800 USD) each in profit from their catch.

The information was released by Luu Minh Nhat, Chairman of the People’s Committee of Tran Van Thoi district.

Tran Hieu Van, owner of two offshore vessels in Song Doc town, said that after deducting expenses, his crew made a 220 million VND (nearly 10,500 USD) profit.

Hundreds of fisherman in U Minh and Phu Tan districts also saw a bumper harvest in their first fishing trip of the year.

Nguyen Van Nghia from U Minh’s Khanh Hoi commune said his vessels caught more than 2 tonnes of shrimp and fish of all kinds after one month at sea. He gained approximately 100 million VND in profit.

Director of the Ca Mau Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Van Su said that while inshore marine resources are becoming exhausted, fishing in deep waters has proved effective, adding that the province targets a total marine catch of 200,000 tonnes in 2014.-VNA
