Phnom Penh (VNA) – Cambodia spent about 600 million USD annually importing pork, fruits and vegetables from neighbouring countries for domestic consumption, the country’s “Khmer Daily” reported on March 28.

The newspaper quoted Mong Rithy, president of Cambodia’s agriculture and industry association, as saying that every year, Phnom Penh imported over 400 million USD worth of pork, or more than 4 million pigs, mostly from Thailand. About 170 - 180 million USD worth of fruits and vegetables come from Vietnam.

Imported fruits and vegetables from Vietnam account for 60 percent of supplies for the country, he said.

There is a shortage of domestic supplies in Cambodia, caused by the fact that people are not able to profit from farming.

The Cambodian government has provided annual financial support of up to 20 million USD for farmers to solve the problem.-VNA
