The main opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) has handed over a document detailing methods to reform Cambodia’s National Election Committee (NEC) to the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), head of the negotiation delegation of CNRP Koy Bunruon told the media on July 19 evening.
Koy Bunruon said he himself presented the document to his counterpart from the CPP Prom Sokha at a meeting on July 19, adding that during the meeting, he also urged the two parties’ top-level leaders to soon hold a meeting for discussing how to end the current political dispute following the national election in July last year.
He affirmed that Prom Sokha said the document and the proposal will be conveyed to the CPP leader as soon as possible.
In the latest negotiation between the two sides on April 12, they agreed that the NEC is a mechanism under the Constitution, but disagreed about the necessary majority rate to approve the committee’s line-up at the National Assembly.
In the national election in July last year, the CPP won 68 parliamentary seats against the 55 seats taken by the CNRP.
However, the CNRP refused to accept the results claiming serious irregularities during the poll, and demanded the establishment of an independent committee to investigate the election outcome. It has boycotted parliament and held many protests demanding for a re-election.
The two sides have held many meetings, including the top-level one between Prime Minister Hun Sen and Rainsy in September last year, however, they did not reach any significant breakthrough on those occasions.-VNA
