Phnom Penh (VNA) – Cambodia has been elected as a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), according to the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
Earning 183 supporting votes out of 188 countries attending the election at the UN headquarters in New York, the US, on June 13, Cambodia will serve as the ECOSOC member in 2019.
As the ECOSOC member, Cambodia will exert effort to participate in discussions and provide explanations to raise living standards, generate jobs, and promote conditions for socio-economic growth.
It will work to speed up international cultural and educational cooperation, measures for international economic and social well-being issues, and the respect to human rights and fundamental freedom rights.
Earlier on June 5, Cambodia was elected as one of the Vice Presidents of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly from September 2018 to September 2019, the ministry said in an announcement.-VNA
