Phnom Penh (VNA) – Cambodia has launched a new study on wind energy and its potential to diversify the country’s energy sector, the Khmer Times newspaper quoted Director General of the Department of Energy under Cambodian Ministry of Mines and Energy Victor Jona as saying.
Singapore-based Blue Circle has been granted permission to conduct the study, with findings expected to be revealed in mid-2018 and the company will invest in the project if potential is found.
Total energy consumption in Cambodia amounts to 2,000 megawatts per year, 60 percent of which is generated from the country’s six hydropower plants, while the rest is imported from Vietnam, Laos and Thailand.
The project to bolster renewable energy is supported by the Cambodian Government, in line with the country’s development policy. Renewable energy development has been on the rise in recent years, especially solar energy.
Cambodia aims to bring electricity to all villages nationwide by 2020. As of mid-2017, 79 percent of Cambodian localities had access to electricity.-VNA
