Phnom Penh (VNA) – As many as 44,999 domestic observers from 81 parties, organisations and associations and 17 foreign observers from Myanmar, Singapore and China, have registered for observing the National Assembly election of Cambodia that is slated for July 29.
Spokesperson of the Cambodian National Election Committee (NEC) Dim Sovannarom said that the committee has also received registrations from 5,711 observers from non-governmental organisations and associations, including some international observers from the International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP).
Sovannarom did not mention specific names of any organisation, but in the previous elections, the majority were from the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia (UYFC).
The registration for observers will wrap up on July 18, but the tally has already eclipsed the 40,456 observers that were registered for the 2013 election.
Spokesman of the Cambodian Council of Ministers Phay Siphan said that the record high in the number of registered observers will dispel criticisms and help ensure the polls are accountable and acceptable.
Meanwhile, election expert Yoeurng Sotheara welcomed the huge number of observers. He said the law does not mention about the participation of national and international observers, but it only has political value to legitimise the election in the eyes of the international community.-VNA
