Leader of the Cambodian royalist FUNCINPEC party, Princess Norodom Arun Rasmey has proposed that King Norodom Sihamoni mediate disputes between the Cambodia People’s Party (CPP) and the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) to stabilise the current turbulence in the nation.
In a letter sent to the King on January 8, the Princess said that with the post-election disputes between the CPP and CNRP still not at an end, he is the only one who can conciliate the two parties and make them sit down for negotiations to seek political stability.
King Norodom Sihamoni is yet to give his answer to the suggestion.
Earlier, three famous Cambodian intellectuals also sent letters to the monarch calling for his intervention.
In the country’s July election, the CPP won 68 out of 123 seats at the National Assembly (NA), while the CNRP won the remaining 55. However, the CNRP rejected the results claiming them to be miscounted, boycotted the NA, demanded a new election and asked Prime Minister Hun Sen to step down.
On January 3, the Phnom Penh Municipal Court summoned the party’s leader Sam Rainsy and his deputy Kem Sokha to appear before the court on January 14 to answer questions about their possible involvement in inciting serious social chaos, killing three people and injuring 10 others.
A senior CNRP official on January 10 said a request has been submitted to suspend the due date for the court hearing.-VNA
