– The opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) on April 2 decided to keep its new leadership and withdraw its slogan in the party’s campaign policy for the communal election slated for June.

Accordingly, Kem Sokha was supported to become leader of the CNRP until the end of his term, replacing former president Sam Rainsy. Meanwhile, the appointment of Pol Hom, Mu Sochua and Eng Chhay Eang as vice presidents would also stand.

The party said that the appointments are in line with new Article 47 of its internal rules adopted on March 2.

The slogan “replacing commune chiefs who serve their party with commune chiefs who serve the people” were officially scrapped from its communal election campaign.

Earlier, the CNRP convened its extraordinary congress on March 2 to amend articles 45 and 47 of the party’s statute, removing an 18-month moratorium on appointing a new president and changing the structure of the party’s leadership. The congress also saw Kem Sokha named as president after the self-exiled incumbent, Sam Rainsy, stepped down on February 11. The move aimed to avoid the risk of the dissolution of the CNRP.

On March 22, Cambodia's Interior Ministry announced that the CNRP’s election of new leadership is contrary to the party’s regulations while asking the party to withdraw the controversial slogan.-VNA
