Central Highlands vigilant at forest fires during dry season peak

The Central Highlands region is mobilising resources to prevent forest fires as it is the peak of the dry season, which begins in November and ends in April every year.

Dak Lak (VNA) – The CentralHighlands region is mobilising resources to prevent forest fires as it is thepeak of the dry season, which begins in November and ends in April every year.

The five provinces of Dak Lak, Dak Nong, GiaLai, Kon Tum and Lam Dong have conducted inspections of forest protection andfire prevention works.

Most localities and forest owners have preparedto deal with fires.

Officers have been sent to risky areas to ensurelocals conduct slash-and-burn cultivation correctly.

The localities have set up hundreds offorest protection teams and increased the number of personel on round-the-clockduty in high-risk areas. Localities and forest owners also signed commitmentswith ethnic minority households living near forests on forest fire prevention.

According to the Central Highlands SteeringCommittee, the region has 2.2 million hectares of natural forests, and over313,313 hectares of planted forests.

In 2016, the region recorded 45 forestfires, damaging some 170 hectares of forest. Of the fires, 34 occurred in LamDong, burning 118 hectares of forest; and 10 in Dak Lak, damaging 19.7 hectaresof forest./.

The released animals include one Hatinh langur (Trachypithecus hatinhensis), two Keeled box turtles (Cuora mouhotii), two Impressed tortoises (Manouria impressa), three Pygmy slow lorises (Nycticebus pygmaeus), one Big-headed turtle (Platysternon megacephalum), four Bourret’s box turtles (Cuora bourreti), and one Bengal monitor lizard (Varanus bengalensis).

Two new lizard species discovered in Vietnam

The discovery of these two new lizard species provides further evidence of Vietnam’s exceptional biodiversity, particularly in the Sop Cop Nature Reserve in Son La province, and the south-central coastal region. This also highlights Vietnam’s critical role as a global biodiversity hotspot for reptiles and amphibians in the Indochinese region.

Cycling inspires greener Ho Chi Minh City
