People in the central region are wrestling with the aftermath of cyclonic storm Nari, which hit the region on October 16, just two weeks after it was devastated by storm Wutip.
As of October 17, the central provinces had evacuated 8,580 people to safe areas.
In Nghe An province, more than 3,500 houses are still underwater due to severe flooding. The province is taking measures to ensure the safety of local people and has recommended them to avoid travelling on flooded and damaged roads.
It has also called for support from individuals and organisations to help locals overcome difficulties and stabilise their lives.
On October 17, Ha Tinh province helped 350 tourists, including 30 foreigners, depart from Cau Treo International Border Gate after they were stranded for two days by flooding. The province has also mobilised all available resources to clear its roads.
The storm, the eleventh to hit Vietnam this year, killed 10 people and injured 76 others, while five are still missing.
According to a report released by the Central Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Control, a total of 548 houses collapsed or were swept away, while 12,515 others were damaged. Around 450 classrooms in 20 schools and office buildings were also destroyed in the region.
More than 350 ha of paddy fields and 3,284 ha of crops were inundated, while 77 fishing vessels were sunk or damaged.
The storm also blew over 95 power poles, causing blackouts in many areas. It also washed away 104,000 cubic metres of soil from irrigation areas.-VNA
