The second round of the China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED) opened in Beijing on May 24, with 50 senior officials from both countries attending.

China ’s Vice Premier Wang Qishan and State Counsellor Dai Bingguo will co-chair the two-day talks with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Chinese President Hu Jintao stated the importance of developing China-US relations, saying that sound bilateral ties contribute to peace, stability and prosperity in the Asia Pacific region and the rest of the world.

Both countries should step up cooperation through bilateral channels and multilateral mechanisms to address global issues such as climate change, nuclear security, energy security, food security, disaster reduction and preparedness, transnational crime and the prevention and control of serious communicable diseases, he said.

He also called on both countries to strengthen bilateral exchanges and cooperation in the fields of trade, energy, environment, law, science and technology, education, agriculture and public health.

President Hu pledged that China will continue to reform its exchange rate mechanisms under the principle of independence, within control and step by step progress.

For his part, US Treasury Secretary Geithner applauded the Chinese government for beginning to adjust China ’s exchange rate and called on Beijing to reduce its tariff barriers and work closer with the world’s economic community to cope with common challenges to ensure a more balanced global economy.

In her opening speech, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that both parties will not reach agreement on every issue but they will hold honest and open discussions. She also called for China ’s cooperation in efforts to keep the Korean Peninsula peaceful and stable.

The S&ED mechanism was agreed upon by Chinese President Hu Jintao and US President Barack Obama during their meeting on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in London in January 2009. The first round of the talks was held in Washington in July of that year./.
