Climate change response – Vietnam-US strategic cooperation area: Deputy PM

Hanoi (VNA) – Deputy Prime Minister PhamBinh Minh on February 23 affirmed that climate change response is the area ofstrategic cooperation between Vietnam and the US.

This is also a key, urgent task of the Vietnamesegovernment to shift towards a green, circular, low-carbon development model, Minhtold US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry, who is on avisit to Vietnam from February 22-25.

The Deputy PM called on Kerry to further support theUS to increase its financial and technical assistance to Vietnam, helping thecountry fulfil the commitment of net-zero emissions by 2050 made at the 26thUnited Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26).

Minh noted with pleasure the progress in the Vietnam-UScomprehensive partnership across spheres, with two-way trade reaching 111billion USD last year.

He thanked Kerry for his efforts andcontributions during the normalisation and enhancement of the Vietnam-US tiesover the past decades.

The Deputy PM suggested the two countries foster theircooperation in the time ahead to promote the bilateral ties in a stable,long-term, pragmatic and effective manner.

He also thanked the US government for its donations of29.1 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines to Vietnam through COVAX, and appreciated the US side’scommitments to increasing the funding to deal with war consequences in theSoutheast Asian nation.  

Minh suggested the US continue its assistance toVietnam in such areas as education-training, health care, humanitarian affairsand digital economy.

In reply, Kerry reiterated the US’s commitments torespecting Vietnam’s political institutions, independence, sovereignty and territorialintegrity, and stressed that the US attaches importance to the comprehensive partnershipwith Vietnam and wishes to advance it to a new high in the time ahead.

Speaking highly of Vietnam’s commitment to net-zeroemissions, he said the US will continue to enhance cooperation and assistdeveloping nations, including Vietnam, in climate change response, particularlyin clean energy development, infrastructure and the management of water andother natural resources.

The US will step up projects on settling warconsequences, including one on dioxin contamination remediation at Bien Hoaairport in the southern province of Dong Nai, while intensifying collaborationwith Vietnam in education-training, development, and science-technology, hesaid.

On this occasion, Deputy PM Minh expressed his hopethat the US will beef up comprehensive, sustainable and inclusive cooperationin the region, further back the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)’sintra-bloc solidarity and centrality, and promote the ASEAN-US strategicpartnership as well as the Mekong-US partnership.

The two sides also shared their views on internationaland regional matters, including the East Sea issue.

They agreed to forge collaboration within the UnitedNations (UN) and at other multilateral forums, contributing to maintainingpeace, stability, security and development in the region and the world atlarge./.

NA deputies continue to discuss amendments to Constitution on May 14

The draft resolution to amend and supplement certain articles of the 2013 Constitution comprises two main articles. Article 1 outlines eight proposed amendments and additions to existing constitutional provisions, focusing on the role of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) and other socio-political organisations, administrative units, and the organisation of local government. Article 2 contains three clauses dealing with enforcement and transitional provisions of the amendments.
