Vientiane (VNA) - The 70th Conference of the ASEAN Committee on Science and Technology (COST 70) opened on November 4 in Vientiane, Laos.

The event drew the participation of ASEAN ministers and officials in charge of science and technology and the ASEAN Secretariat representatives.

Participants discussed ways to foster the science and technology cooperation within the frameworks of ASEAN and ASEAN + 3 (China, the Republic of Korea and Japan) as the ASEAN Economic Community is scheduled to be formed at the end of this year.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Lao Minister of Science and Technology Borviengkham Vongdara said that as science and technology play a key role in sustainable development, ASEAN member countries should be unanimous in seeking ways for collaboration in the field in the next 10 years.

The ASEAN Committee for Science and Technology, which was established in 1978, has contributed to promoting the sci-tech cooperation within the bloc, he said.

He expressed his hope that this year’s conference will reach an action plan of ASEAN on science and technology from 2016-2025 to be submitted to the 16 th ASEAN Science and Technology Ministers’ Meeting for approval.

This will lay the foundation for the implementation of related action plans and the strengthening of mutually beneficial cooperation among ASEAN member countries as well as between ASEAN and its partner and dialogue countries, he added.-VNA
