Vientiane (VNA) – Prolonged downpours and floods have caused severe damage to Laos, particularly the northern localities of Sayaboury and Bokeo.

The level of the Mekong River remained high as of August 27, inundating entertainment squares for children, roads and many other facilities in Vientiane.

Heavy rains on August 20-21 triggered flooding in Khop district, Sayaboury province, adversely impacting 10 villages with over 1,300 households, destroying hundreds of hectares of crops, and affecting local schools, hospitals, roads, and power and water infrastructure.

Meanwhile, serious landslides due to torrential rains have blocked many roads and caused huge property losses in Oudomsay province.

Many areas in Bokeo province, including the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone, have been submerged in water following heavy rains.

The Lao Government and local administrations have carried out timely response measures to help the residents soon stabilise their lives./.
