The 20th meeting of the Coordinating Body on the Seas of East Sea (COBSEA) opened in Ha Long city of north coast Quang Ninh province on Nov. 2.

The four-day event drew expert Ellik Adler and representatives of 10 member nations of COBSEA, 36 international delegates and the General Department of Sea and Islands of Vietnam.

The meeting is intended to assess the organisation’s activities and reach consensus on plans to carry out COBSEA’s future strategic action programmes and projects.

The participants discussed the next stages of the Global Environment Fund on East Sea projects and marine space plan as well as COBSEA’s action plan and Vietnam’s concerns regarding sea waste and ecosystem-based management.

COBSEA’s cooperation with ASEAN’s marine working group, along with orientations to enhance cooperation between COBSEA and Vietnam, as wells as a number of other issues, were tabled for discussion.

They also touched upon projects dealing with strategies for issues relating to the sea, the financial capability of COBSEA, the United Nations Environment Programme’s medium-term strategy and the UNEP/CF projects regarding an East sea strategy plan./.
