The chairman of the municipal People'sCommittee, Van Huu Chien, said on Mar. 29 that a standard helmet wouldbe sold in the city for 50,000 VND (2.3 USD) starting April 1, abouthalf of the current market price.
The move aims to preventpeople from buying cheap and counterfeit helmets, which are behind anincreasing number of head injures, according to the Ministry ofTransport Ministry.
Chien said the city would lend helmetproducers 8 billion VND (380,000 USD) with zero interest rate, in returnfor which the producers would supply the city with 100,000 helmets overtwo years.
Last week, the city broke ground on a 5,000 sq.m helmet production facility with an annual capacity of 100,000 helmets.
"We hope that all city's dwellers can wear quality-tested helmets fromaccredited producers, starting next month," Chien said.-VNA
