More than 150,000 dormitory rooms will be available in major cities for university and college students by the end of the year, according to the Government.
Deputy Minister of Construction Nguyen Tran Nam , who announced this at an online forum with students this week, said his ministry has been ordered to ensure at least 60 percent of students' housing demand is met by 2015.
Dormitories are now being built in HCM City , Hanoi , Da Nang , and Can Tho.
The Government has also proposed to the National Assembly to issue bonds worth 8 trillion VND (400 million USD) to finance construction of dormitories.
Of 94 dormitory projects that have been approved, seven were completed in August and accommodate around 150,000 students.
A further 50 will be completed by the end of this year and house another 150,000.
Construction of the others will continue next year.
Nam told the students that private investors will be encouraged to take part in social welfare projects, including building students' dormitories.
More than three million students attending colleges and universities around the country are forced to rent rooms at high rents.
Existing dormitories only meet 15-20 percent of students' housing needs./.
