Deputy PM: UN constitutes important part in Vietnam’s foreign policy

The United Nations is always an important part in Vietnam’s foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, diversification, multilateralisation and active international integration, said Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh.

Hanoi (VNA) – TheUnited Nations is always an important part in Vietnam’s foreign policy ofindependence, self-reliance, diversification, multilateralisation and activeinternational integration, said Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister PhamBinh Minh.

During a meeting in Hanoi onApril 11 with newly-accredited UN Resident Coordinator, UNDP ResidentRepresentative in Vietnam Kamal Malhotra, Minh thanked the UN for its supportto the country’s process of national construction, defence, and developmentover the past 40 years.

Vietnam hopes that the UNcontinues its role in maintaining international peace and security, promotingthe observation of international law, and supporting countries, includingVietnam, in socio-economic development, especially in implementing the 2030Agenda on Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, hesaid.

For his part, Malhotra congratulatedVietnam on its great achievements in socio-economic development after 30 yearsof reform, becoming one of the first countries that have fulfilled the MillenniumDevelopment Goals ahead of schedule.

He applauded Vietnam’s active andeffective contributions to UN activities, including peacekeeping operations anddevelopment issues, adding that Vietnam has also been an active and responsiblemember of UN important mechanisms such as the UN Economic and Social Counciland International Law Committee.

The official affirmed that the UNwill work closely with Vietnam in organising activities to mark 40 years sinceVietnam’s admission to the UN (September 20, 1977-2017).

Malhotra also vowed to try hisbest to foster cooperative ties between the UN and Vietnam, thus supportingVietnam in national construction and development.-VNA
