Hanoi (VNA) - The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

– Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh visited and presented gifts to children at the Hanoi nursing centre for children with disabilities on May 31, on the occasion of the International Children’s Day (June 1) and the Action Month for Children 2024.

The centre, established in 1978 and put under the management of the Hanoi Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, is in charge of caring for, conducting functional rehabilitation, providing general education and vocational training, and giving career guidance to disabled children. – Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has recently signed a directive on building a financial plan for the 2026-2030 period.

He ordered ministries, competent agencies and localities to make forecasts on the influence of the global and domestic political, economic and financial situation on mobilisation of and demand for capital and state budget during the five-year span. Read full story

– Secretary General of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) Ar. Siti Rozaimeriyanty Dato Haji Abdul Rahman has sent a letter of congratulations to Tran Thanh Man on his election as Chairman of the Vietnamese National Assembly (NA) at the seventh plenary session of the 15th NA.

In the letter, the Secretary General extended her sincerest and deepest thanks to the Vietnamese NA for its support for and close cooperation with the AIPA and the AIPA Secretariat. Read full story

– Deputy Minister of National Defence Hoang Xuan Chien is leading a Vietnamese delegation to the 21st Shangri-La Dialogue (SLD) that opened in Singapore on May 31.

The dialogue is Asia's leading defence summit, where defence chiefs of nations discuss the region's most pressing security challenges, engage in important bilateral negotiations and come up with new approaches together. Read full story

– Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Vietnam’s Permanent Representative to the UN, has spoken highly of UNICEF’s support for the nation in protecting and promoting children’s rights, particularly those related to education, health care, nutrition, and vaccination.

Receiving Director of UNICEF’s Public Partnerships Division June Kunugi in New York on May 30, Giang affirmed that as child care and protection are a leading priority in its socio-economic development strategy, Vietnam has devoted necessary resources for child development. Read full story

- Vietnamese Ambassador to Australia Pham Hung Tam received John Bryant, an Australian veteran who participated in the May 1968 battle at So Ga, So Hoi and Dong Tram bases, north of Thu Dau Mot town (now in Binh My commune, Bac Tan Uyen district) the southern province of Binh Duong.

Bryant shared his journey with several Australian and US veterans in their efforts to find possible burial places of Vietnamese martyrs who died in this battle. Read full story

– Vietnam’s total retail sales of consumer goods and services during January-May increased 8.7% year-on-year to top 2.58 quadrillion VND (101.3 billion USD), according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).

Revenue from retail sales of goods was estimated at more than 1.99 quadrillion VND, accounting for 77.5% of the total and up 7.4% against the same time last year. Read full story./.
