Deputy Foreign Minister Shuji Kira has emphasised it’s the best time now for Japan-Vietnam relations while granting the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) an interview on October 21.

The Japanese diplomat referred to a Government shift in Japan in August with the Democratic Party of Japan taking over the power that has put Vice President of the Japan-Vietnam Friendship Parliamentary Alliance Yukio Hatoyama into the new Prime Minister.

He added Vietnam and Indonesia would play the key role in the Southeast Asian economy to make the region core of the world’s economic growth amid global economic downturns.

Kira also pledged continued official development assistance (ODA) for Vietnam through projects on infrastructure to help develop economy and transport system in the Southeast Asian nation.

“Japan is willing to cooperate with and pass ODA programmes for Vietnam,” said the senior diplomat, adding that it is a matter of fact although State budgets have undergone major changes under the DPJ power.

In fact, in March, the DPJ sent a parliament delegation to Vietnam as part of its Southeast Asian tour. The delegation included the then DPJ General Secretary Katsuya Okada, who later become Foreign Minister and now Deputy Foreign Minister Kira.

All this has made it good for relations between Japan and Vietnam, concluded the senior diplomat of Japan./.
