The People’s Committee of the southern province Dong Nai has decided to earmark over 36 billion VND (nearly 1.7 million USD) per year for medical waste collection and treatment.

About 8 tonnes of waste are discharged every day from local medical establishments, one-fourths of which is medical waste that needs to be collected and processed appropriately.

Meanwhile, most local hospitals fail to obey regulations in sorting out, transporting and treating medical waste.

At present, there are 10 hospitals in Dong Nai in charge of processing solid waste from health centres. They are requested to use specialised devices and vehicles to transport and dispose medical waste in accordance with the required standards.

The committee has allowed these hospitals to set up a three-member waste collection, transport and treatment teams.-VNA
