The People’s Court of Nhon Trach district in southern Dong Nai province on September 23 gave jail sentences ranging from 10 to 16 months to 12 people involved in destroying assets of industrial zones on May 13-14.

Duong Cong Luc, Bui Van Quyet, Vo Van Tu, Huynh Son Lam, Vo Van Phuong, Cao Huu Tho, Nguyen The Hien, Tran Van Can, Nguyen Trong Hiep, Huynh Van Tiep, Truong Phuoc Thao and Nguyen Van Quy were declared to “disturb public order”, the charge stated in article 245 of the Penal Code.

According to the indictment, these people took advantage of the rallies protesting China’s illegal placement of its Haiyang Shiyou-981 drilling rig in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf.

At around 9 pm on May 13, they demolished property of the Texhong textile company located in the Nhon Trach 1 industrial zone. They later walked on in the zone compound yelling to incite others to join in causing public disturbance.

These people were arrested by police on May 14.

Earlier on June 13, the district court imprisoned Phan Van Giau and Thach Quy, 6 months and 5 months, respectively, for stealing property during the protests against China’s illegal actions in Vietnam’s waters.

The duo broke into the Minh An company where they worked for in the Nhon Trach 3 industrial zone to steal five golf clubs, a pair of computer speakers and a watch totaling at 3.6 million VND (169 USD) in value.

Dong Nai authorities had taken legal proceedings against over 250 people involved in 26 criminal cases of “causing social disturbance”, “destroying property,” “stealing property,” “openly appropriating property,” and “resisting against on-duty officials”. These people all took advantages of the rallies protesting China’s violations of Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf.-VNA
