Hanoi, (VNA) - A 6.1 magnitude quake struck off the coast of the eastern Philippines on February 8, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
However, there was no immediate report of damage caused by the quake, which struck 111km east of Surigao on Mindanao at a depth of 80km.
The Philippines is regularly hit by quakes as the country is on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a horse-shoe shaped band of volcanoes and fault lines circling the edges of the Pacific Ocean.
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, Mount Merapi, one of the world's most active volcanoes, spewed a plume of grey ash into the sky on February 7 evening.
Its last major eruption in 2010 killed more than 300 people and forced some 280,000 others to evacuate.
In 1930, its strong eruption claimed some 1,300 lives, while another in 1994 killed about 60 people.
Indonesia has more than 17,000 islands and islets, with nearly 130 active volcanoes. It also sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", like the Philippines.-VNA
