The US-based “East Meets West” (EMW) Foundation granted 47 scholarships worth nearly three billion VND in total to new students of the 2013-2014 School Year at a ceremony in central Da Nang city on August 27.

This is part of the foundation’s “SPELL Goes to College” programme, which was started in 2012 to assist disadvantaged students in seven central provinces from Quang Binh to Phu Yen.

Of the recipients, 36 have received long-term scholarships supporting their journey through primary and secondary school.

Each individual was presented with a 61-million-VND scholarship (roughly 2,880 USD) to pay for their four years’ study at a tertiary institution.

The EMW is one of the largest non-governmental organisations operating in Vietnam.

It has devoted more than 100 million USD to education and training, healthcare, safe water, environmental sanitation and infrastructure development programmes.

The “SPELL Goes to College” programme has granted 113 scholarships since 2012, totalling over 7 billion VND.-VNA
