The Vietnamese Embassy in Canada held a get-together with the Vietnamese community on January 31 on the threshold of the Lunar New Year holiday (Tet), which will fall in mid-February.
At the event, Ambassador To Anh Dung reviewed the homeland’s development with economic growth pace at 5.6-5.8 percent, FDI topping 20 billion USD, and overseas remittances of about 12 billion USD.
The Vietnamese Government stepped up economic restructuring, administrative reform, investment climate improvement, and negotiation on free trade agreements, he added.
He said Vietnam-Canada relations made forward progress last year, as demonstrated by the signing of a letter of intent defining prioritised cooperation areas for the years ahead during the visit to the North American country by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh.
Two-way trade is expected to approximate 3 billion USD in 2015, compared to over 2.5 billion USD in 2013, the diplomat noted, adding that Vietnam is now listed in Canada’s trade promotion, development assistance, and education cooperation priorities.
He reaffirmed that expatriates are an inseparable part of Vietnam and the State always creates the best possible conditions for them to integrate into local communities while preserving national identities and contributing to the homeland.
The Ambassador appreciated their contributions to the homeland’s development through investment, trade, and education as well as charitable activities.
At the get-together, participants had a chance to enjoy folk songs along with traditional dishes.-VNA
