If young people do not enhance their digital capacity now, it will not only affect their career opportunities but also the national brand.

Hanoi (VNA) - Digital transformation poses challenges to the youth but also offers opportunities for them to make breakthroughs and create new values, contributing to the strength and prosperity of the country in the future.

First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union (HCYU) Bui Quang Huy made the statement on September 14 at the opening of a seminar entitled “Enhancing digital capacity for the youth” in Hanoi.

Digital transformation is an inevitable trend that is taking place in all aspects of society and on a global scale. There isn’t a country, organisation, or individual that can stand outside this process, Huy noted.

Along with the common perception of the Party and State leaders, Huy said the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union determined that digital transformation is first and foremost a transformation of awareness.

“Young people, more than anyone else, must be the pioneers in improving their own digital capabilities and supporting the community to improve their digital capabilities," Huy said.

According to him, in the context of digital transformation, young people face many challenges, with the most obvious in the labour market as machines gradually replace humans in certain sectors and the corresponding shift in the global workforce.

With such fierce competition, if young people do not enhance their digital capabilities and proactively participate in the digital transformation process, it will not only affect their career and future development, but more broadly, the nation.

In addition to the efforts of each young person, the Youth Union in recent times has organized many activities to create a favourable environment for young people to change their perception of digital transformation. The activities will also help youth to access and improve digital knowledge and skills necessary for studying, working, starting a business, and establishing a career.

Ana Catauta, a delegate from the Romanian National Assembly and Chairperson of the UNESCO Joint Committee, said currently her country is also very actively encouraging young people to improve their digital capacity.

“Romania is a country with 5G coverage over 90% of the area. Now, we do not need to bring hard copies of documents to do administrative procedures, all have been digitized. Therefore, it is inevitable that every citizen needs to improve their digital capabilities," said Catauta.

Catauta said she believes policymakers need to pay attention to issues that arise during the digital transformation process, such as the gap between generations, because elderly people may have limited access to the social media.

She also mentioned the possibility of decreasing respect for cultural diversity on social networks, difficulties in controlling content posted on the Internet, and intellectual property copyright infringement.

“Technology changes our lives, bringing people closer together, spreading cultural values more easily, but we also need to continue to protect traditional cultural and moral values in society,” Catauta noted./.
