Expert: Businesses need better awareness of sustainable development

It is necessary to raise enterprises’ awareness of the importance of as well as advantages and benefits from sustainable development, an expert has said.

 Hanoi (VNA) – It is necessary to raise enterprises’ awareness of theimportance of as well as advantages and benefits from sustainable development, anexpert has said.  

Nguyen Quang Vinh, Secretary General of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce andIndustry and Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Business Council for SustainableDevelopment, said Vietnam’s business community have had clearer awareness ofcooperation opportunities and risks that they may encounter.

However, contributions made by enterprises, especially those operating in the financialsector, to the nation’s sustainable development progress remain limited, henoted.  

Vietnamese businesses are still meeting difficulties in integrating sustainabledevelopment goals (SDGs) into their sustainable development reports, he added.

Vinh stressed the need to outline policies to encourage businesses to make sustainabledevelopment reports, especially loosing legal procedures to facilitate theprocess.

Responding to the UN Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, 193 membernations approved 17 SDGs of enterprises regarding poverty reduction; educationquality; gender equality; clean water and sanitation; clean and sustainableenergy; job and economic growth; innovation industry and infrastructure; inequalityreduction; urbanization and sustainable community; responsible consumption andproduction; climate change adaption; water and land resources.

Vinh said 1,500 CEOs worldwide joined the dialogue in New York to discuss therole played by the enterprises in the world’s sustainable development throughtheir business to promote economic growth, create jobs, stablise society andprotect the environment.

Thousands of innovation business ideas have been introduced and applied,towards expanding enterprises’ business activities through establishing partnershipand business, Vinh noted.

Statistics show the number of enterprises that built sustainable development reportshave doubled in the past five years.

However, almost small and medium-sizedenterprises (SMEs) – the dominant force in the Vietnamese businesscommunity, have not yet known well about sustainable development reports.-VNA
