
Hanoi (VNA) – Prof. Dr Dang Huy Huynh, Chairman ofthe Heritage Tree Council and Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Association forConservation of Nature and Environment (VACNE), has become the first Vietnameseto be honoured as an ASEAN Biodiversity Hero.
He is also one of the 10 persons receiving the ASEANBiodiversity Heroes Award on the occasion of ASEAN’s 50th founding anniversary.
Huynh, 88, has spent more than six decades studyingbiology, greatly contributing to biodiversity conservation in Vietnam and othercountries in the region. He is able to inspire the community to biodiversityconservation and development and was recognised as one of the leadingscientists of Vietnam.
He has had a number of valuable scientificworks, including 154 studies published on prestigious Vietnamese and foreignscience magazines and 14 books on animals, ecology, biodiversity conservationand environmental protection.
The scientist also played a significant role inlaunching an annual workshop to share experience in biodiversity conservationin Truong Son mountain range, which borders Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, alongwith the VACNE’s recognition of heritage trees. These initiatives have receivedmajor support from the community and domestic and foreign environmentalists.
Huynh also holds a number of important positionssuch as President of the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources underthe Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Chairman of the VietnamZoological Society, and Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Society for Biology.
He made great efforts to help nearly 3,000 trees acrossVietnam to be recognised as heritage trees, the move that has significanteffect on preserving natural resources.-VNA
